HERE'S THE DEAL

1. We believe dogs deserve lives worth living.

A dog's life should not be measured by the absence of mistakes, but by the presence of purpose and every dog deserves the opportunity to move, explore, rest, play, work, learn, and belong. True welfare is not merely the prevention of discomfort—it is the opportunity to live a full, complex and meaningful life.

2. We believe life together is the destination.

For thousands of years, dogs have walked beside us… not simply as animals we owned, but as companions who shared our work, our homes, our adventures, and our lives. Dogs were never meant to exist only in obedience training sessions on a field or managed with manufactured enrichment experiences behind window blinds pulled shut. They were meant to share that "life worth living” with us.

3. We believe the purpose of training is capability.

Training is not measured by how precisely a dog performs in practice, but by how confidently that dog can share everyday life with the people who love them.  Training should prepare dogs for the realities of life together.  We should build a skill set that allows the dog to safely experience the “life worth living” we want for them.

4. We believe freedom is earned through capability.

Freedom is one of the greatest gifts we can offer a dog.  It is built through trust, communication, responsibility, understanding, and the skills to navigate the world safely and confidently. The greater the freedom, the greater the responsibility—for both dog and human.

5. We believe structure is an act of compassion.

Clear expectations, thoughtful guidance, meaningful boundaries, and consistent leadership do not limit a dog… it’s structure and it prepares a dog for life.  Structure creates predictability.  Predictability builds confidence.  Confidence builds capability.  Capability makes a “life worth living” possible.

6. We believe relationships matter more than methods.

No single philosophy owns the truth.  Good ideas are not confined to organizations, certifications, schools of thought, or training labels.  Knowledge is acquired but wisdom is gained from experience.  We will remain students of dogs before we become defenders of ideology.  Our loyalty is to the dog and not to methods.

7. We believe every partnership is unique.

Every dog is shaped by a unique combination of traits, conditions and experiences. While the principles that guide us remain the same, the path forward is unique to each partnership. Our responsibility is not to force every dog into a rigid formula, but to apply timeless principles in ways that help dogs and the people who love them experience a life worth living and thrive together.

8. We believe dogs deserve mentorship, not simply management.

Dogs deserve more than a life of control or a life of management. They deserve guidance that builds understanding instead of dependence, confidence instead of uncertainty, and trust instead of fear. Because the greatest measure of success is not what a dog can do for a person… it is the “life worth living” a dog and person build together.

Hey there!

I'M JOHN.

Read my story  ➝

I believe dogs aren’t just something we train — they’re something we live with.

For more than three decades, I've been fascinated by what makes partnerships between people and dogs truly work.

For the last twelve years, I've had the privilege of helping thousands of dogs and their people through my work at Top Dog Training Kentucky, but what I've learned reaches far beyond training sessions.

I came to realize that while training 100% matters, it isn't the goal.

The goal is building dogs we can confidently share our lives with—at home, around the neighborhood, on the trail, over coffee with friends, or wherever life takes us.  Training is one piece of the puzzle.

That's why I created Living With Dogs.

Not as another training method or philosophy, but as a place to rethink what life with dogs can become and to see the big picture.

Because the best life with dogs is measured by the freedom, connection, and experiences we share together.

Dogs.

Because they make us better.

People.

Because the dogs need a guide.

Purpose

Because life is bigger when it's shared.
